Cardi's Furniture Teams Up for Marketplace Fairness Act
NiRoPe Welcomes US Senator Jack Reed, RI Governor Lincoln Chaffee, and Bruce Charleson of Arnold Lumber Company.
WEST WARWICK , RI – In an effort to support jobs in Rhode Island and create a level playing field for Rhode Island businesses, U.S. Senator Jack Reed, Governor Lincoln Chafee, and independent retailers today urged Congress to pass the Marketplace Fairness Act. This bipartisan legislation would end an unfair tax disparity that harms many local small businesses and benefits large out-of-state e-retailers.
The Marketplace Fairness Act would require online retailers and catalogue sellers to follow the same rules as businesses on Main Street and collect state sales taxes. One study found that Rhode Island lost out on an estimated $70.4 million in uncollected sales tax revenue last year because of the inability to collect from online and catalog sellers, according to a non-partisan report by the National Conference of State Legislatures.
The bipartisan bill gives states the ability to enforce their own sales and use tax laws and relieves consumers of the legal burden to report to state tax departments the sales taxes they owe on online purchases. The bill does not create new taxes or increase existing taxes. Instead, the bill will help states and cities collect billions in unpaid taxes already owed, reducing the need to raise new taxes on tax compliant businesses and citizens.
“The reason there is broad bipartisan support for the Marketplace Fairness Act is because this is an issue of simple fairness. Whether they are located online or on the corner, all retailers should be treated equally under the law. We need to put Rhode Island-based businesses and workers on a level playing field so they can compete against out-of-state retailers that unfairly benefit from tax loopholes. The Marketplace Fairness Act will help restore competitive balance and gives states the flexibility to opt in or out,” said Senator Reed. “Establishing clear and consistent rules for the collection of sales taxes on all purchases will support jobs here in Rhode Island and help the state strengthen its finances. Helping communities better collect unpaid taxes that are already owed will also help reduce the need to raise new taxes.”
“I have long advocated for passage of Marketplace Fairness legislation,” Governor Chafee said. “As I travel across Rhode Island talking to bricks-and-mortar business owners, this topic of fairness often comes up. The Marketplace Fairness Act will help Rhode Island businesses by leveling the playing field between Main Street stores and online retailers, and it will bring valuable revenue to our state.”
Governor Chafee has been a leading voice on this issue since taking office in 2011. In July of that year, in advance of the National Governors Association’s summer meeting, Governor Chafee and U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) collaborated to send letters to each of the nation’s Governors urging them to lobby their respective Senate delegations to support Marketplace Fairness legislation. Governor Chafee also submitted supportive written testimony to the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation in August 2012.
Senator Reed is a cosponsor of the bipartisan Marketplace Fairness Act, introduced by Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY), which would encourage states to simplify and streamline their tax rules and supply the necessary software to online retailers.
Rhode Island is part of a consortium of over 22 states nationwide that have already agreed to be part of the “Streamlined Sales Tax Agreement,” an agreement between states and online retailers which, among other steps, ensures states that collect sales tax online adopt uniform tax definitions; require a single tax return from businesses; and have a single entity administer the system. Other states taking similar steps include: Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
To address the concerns of small on-line retailers, the legislation exempts companies that have under $1 million in Internet sales from the collection requirement.
The Senate is expected to open debate on the measure this evening. When a non-binding version of the Marketplace Fairness Act was offered as an amendment to the Senate fiscal year 2014 budget resolution last month it passed 75 to 24.
Leading sponsors of the bill include U.S. Senator Mike Enzi (R-WY), U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Senator Reed, and U.S. Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD). The Marketplace Fairness Act has also been endorsed by 29 Governors (17 Republican, 11 Democrat, and 1 Independent), and a number of diverse groups and businesses of all sizes, including: Amazon.com; AFL-CIO; American Conservative Union; Barnes and Noble, Inc.; Buy.com; Cardi’s Furniture; National Governors Association; National League of Cities; the Rhode Island Retail Federation; and the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

This program has served the Greater Boston community over the last 35 years by helping hundreds of
disadvantaged, low-income single mothers and their children break the cycle of poverty. By providing families the critical tools they need ? education, job training, parenting and life skills, food and clothing assistance, excellent childhood programming, a Montessori pre-school, and much more - the families can finally pull themselves out of crisis and move towards much greater stability. Most importantly, this in turn opens the door to a far better future for the children, and the destructive legacy of intergenerational poverty can be brought to an end. The innovation of Julie's is that approach to education and social services is holistic, intensive, and tailored to the families'
pressing needs. Instead of having to navigate a labyrinth of services spread
throughout the city, mothers can access over twenty services in one single, welcoming
location. Serving the parent and child simultaneously has the additional effect of strengthening the family unit and fostering healthy parent-child relationships.
We hope you will join Celebrity Guest Host Patrick Little for a great day of golf on Monday, July 15, 2013 at the World Class Wannamoisett Country Club in Rumford, R.I. for The Groden Network's 33rd Annual John Trimble Fund Golf Tournament for Autism, Presented By: Mutual of America and Phred's Drug.

Discover the Stadium Theater 2012 - 2013 Season!!!
Stadium Theatre Performing Arts Centre
28 Monument Square, Main Street
Woonsocket, RI 02895
Phone: 401-762-4545
Fax: 401-765-4949
The Stadium Theatre was built in 1926 and was recognized as one of the finest theatres in the country.
The Stadium Theatre was erected under the supervision of Mr. R. E. Hall, chief consultant, architect and engineer in the construction of the Paramount Theatre in New York. The Stadium Realty Foundation, Arthur I. Darman, President and Treasurer operated the Theatre. In 1926, artist Maurice Compris chose his theme of Muses to decorate the lobby and the Grand Hall.
The Stadium stopped operating as a daily theatre in the 1970’s and was left unheated for many years. Francis L Lanctot, former Mayor of the city of Woonsocket, had a vision that the Stadium could once again become vibrant and prosper. Through his enthusiasm, patience, and persistance the “Save Our Stadium” Committee was formed in 1991 with the soul purpose of saving and restoring the theatre to it’s former glory. After a strong, cross section of community leadership came forward and was able to demonstrate local support for the restoration of the theatre through public events, feasibility studies and economic impact projects; the non-profit Stadium Theatre Foundation was formed. The Foundation received it’s 501 - c (3) approval as a non-profit corporation in 1996. In March 1998, the Foundation purchased the theatre. Thanks to strong grassroots and business support, the Foundation was able to use grants and donations as a down payment. From 1996 to present, approximately Three Million Dollars has been raised. Restoration took place under the direction of Daniel Peloquin, Architect and the John Canning Preservation and Restoration Studios.

Only Children Hear Me is an Educational Children’s Chapter Book, best suited to children from 7
to 12 years of age, but is also enjoyed by adults.
This book can open a dialogue between adults and children, allowing them to discuss subjects
that otherwise may be difficult to approach. Read it with a child or give it to them to read
themselves. Accompanied by The Teaching Manual it allows children to discuss situations that
have occurred in their lives. It is written in the voice of a loving English Shepherd named Jake
who guides and advises children.
Jake addresses serious illness, race, adoption, disability, bullying and abuse, gently, in story
form. He encourages children to talk to a trusted adult when they have a problem or are being
abused, and gives them a list of people they can consider talking to.
The book is available through the "Event Link" below at Barnes&Noble.com,
Amazon.com or IUniverse.com. It is also available as an e book.

Professional football player Steve Gostkowski wants to ensure that each child in our region experiences the joys of childhood regardless of health issues. That’s why he has joined with Hasbro Children’s Hospital to form The Steve Gostkowski Kick 4 Kids Club. The Club was launched at the start of the 2010 NFL season and attracted more than 40 loyal members in a few short months.
Here’s how it works. Each time Steve makes a field goal during a regular season game he donates $300 to Hasbro Children’s Hospital, and for each extra point he donates $100. Members of the Club pledge to match Steve’s gift at two giving levels – either $10 or $25 for each field goal and extra point – for maximum individual gifts of $250 or $500. During its inaugural season, the Kick 4 Kids Club raised over $16,000 for Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
Members of the Kick 4 Kids Club are eligible to win commemorative football memorabilia signed by Steve. Those who join at the higher giving level are also invited to a reception with Steve at the end of the season. At our recent celebration for the 2010 season we raffled several items including a signed Gostkowski jersey, cleats, hats and game balls. Steve offered warm thanks to attendees and spoke with passion about his support for Hasbro Children’s Hospital. He shared stories with great humor and humility about his experiences in the NFL.
Hasbro Children’s Hospital is fortunate to have the support of Citadel Broadcasting stations to promote the Kick 4 Kids Club on local radio. WPRI Channel 12 and Fox Providence have provided PSA’s which aired when the Club launched in late August 2010. Design services for the solicitation brochure were generously provided by (add)ventures.
Funds raised by the Kick 4 Kids Club are directed to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital General Fund which supports essential programs throughout the hospital such as Child Life Services, Healing Arts, the Injury Prevention Program, and a variety of clinical and enrichment programs.
The Anchor of Hope Fund was established in the year 2001 by the Roman Catholic

this cause directly fulfill the mission of The Anchor of Hope Fund as they assist

On 11/19/2010 The Souza Elder Stay At Home Fund was founded at the Community Foundation of Southeastern MA to help elders with Dementia/Alzheimers and who
don't qualify for public assistance get free home care. There is a great need for
people to be aware of this fund and to donate. The current goal is to have the fund open at various foundations. From there they can make grants to non-profits across the U.S. as apposed to only local non-profits. Services will come from agency's that
the non-profits work with. At Southeastern they have one year to raise $10,000 to start, however after that, donations need to
keep coming in to keep the services out there. "Keep Our Elders Home" is their motto. This fund will prevent elders who qualify from being put in an institution. To donate today click the "Event Link" below.
